The more I read of what you post here, the more concerned I get. We’re not just talking about drinking too much occasionally, we’re talking about drinking even though you don’t like it. When children or adolescents are spending too much time in front of the television or listlessly whiling away hours, it may be time to step in. Curtail the screen-time hours and help your child look for and plan stimulating activates or hobbies. If they are not interested in pursuing them independently, get involved yourself or recruit other members of the family. As difficult a challenge as boredom can present to overcome for anyone of any age, the answer lies in confronting and moving through and beyond the causes of boredom. When referring to alcohol addiction, some may conjure up an image of a person consuming multiple daily bottles of low-end vodka and struggling to hold a steady job. Alcohol use disorder impacts millions across the nation, many of which are considered high-functioning. In other words, everyday working Americans. The Anxiety and Depression Association of America says that alcohol and other substances can worsen anxiety symptoms. About 20% of Americans with an anxiety or mood disorder such as depression have an alcohol or other substance use disorder. Self-medicating can drastically impact overall health and well-being. It’s also a common reason many become dependent on substances. Not only this, self-medicating can lead to and exacerbate mental health conditions leading to a dual diagnosis condition.

When I’m on a roll and am getting things done i’ll not even think about alcohol or weed. My ex-gf just recently turned 21 and she’s jumped into the bar and drinking scene. This doesn’t parallel my current outlook, but as a college student it can be somewhat difficult to say no when at a party. Not that difficult, I’ve said no numerous times. The problem lies that when I drink or smoke weed (always at night, i’m totally fine during the day) is that I never have just one drink, or one bowl/blunt/etc. First thing that comes to mind is practicing gratitude, especially when I’m bored or my attitude is getting shitty. Taking a moment to find some appreciation really helps to right the ship. The other question about sitting with your bad feelings or distracting yourself, I would answer yes and yes. Distraction is great and I always feel better when I’m busy. More important though is learning to sit with myself even when I feel bad.

I’m forced to deal with the emotions rather than bury them which I know deep down is better.
A full-on workout is great, but if you’re not up for it, a dance sesh or some jumping jacks will suffice.
